1963 THE BEATLES original concert poster (Town Hall Ballroom Abervagenny) Lennon
1963 The Beatles original concert poster (Town Hall Ballroom, Abervagenny). A highly sought after original concert poster advertising The Beatles performance at the Town Hall Ballroom, Abervagenny on Saturday 22nd June 1963. In what was their only performance at the Town Hall, the boys played for around twenty minutes in front of a modest 600 fans. John Lennon arrived in the nick of time, having been at the BBC’s Television Theatre to record an edition of’Juke Box Jury’. After the taping finished he was rushed to Battersea Heliport and flown to Wales in a specially-chartered helicopter. He landed at the Pen y Pound football ground in Abergavenny at almost 10pm and joined the other Beatles just in time to take the stage. Paul, George and Ringo had driven to Abergavenny earlier in the day in their van and were treated to a civic reception hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress. The concert came at a time when the Fab Four’s popularity was starting to spread, although it wasn’t until late 1963 that “Beatlemania” really took hold. The poster measures 20 x 30 inches and has been stored folded for many years. There is some fading to the yellow print, mainly towards the bottom of the poster and stretching up into the’E’ and’A’ in’BEATLES’. A few small spots of soiling and a couple of minor tears to the edges and where the folds intersect. Overall in very good vintage condition. The poster originates from the collection of former British music promoter Alan Goldsmith, who has 50 years experience producing rock & roll concerts, air/stunt shows and exhibitions. He is the owner & creator of Mountfitchet Castle and The House on the Hill, the largest toy museum in the world. Goldsmith is also the author of the book Giving it Both Barrels! , in which he spills the beans on his fascinating life as a 1960’s rock promoter. Included with the poster is a signed note from Alan Goldsmith stating that it came from his personal concert poster collection and referring to the aforementioned book.
