GRATEFUL DEAD Alice Cooper VELVET UNDERGROUND Janis Joplin 1969 Concert Poster

This is an ultra ultra rare and significant probably one-of-a-kind item! It is a guaranteed original (printed before the events) two-sided poster. It is very likely the only copy to have survived! In 1969 The Electric Factory in Philadelphia put out a handful of these, one each month announcing, advertising and promoting their upcoming concerts masquerading as a newspaper-like newsletter. They measure 11″ x 17″ and were folded, stuffed in envelopes and mailed to their mailing list instead of sending out the handbills they had previously sent to members of their list. They were laid out to appear like a page from a newspaper and state “PAID ADVERTISEMENT” at the top of one side. I don’t know if this was because of postal regulations for cheaper mailing or why this is there. In the upper left box of the “front” side of the poster is a schedule of upcoming shows at the Electric Factory. The rest of this side is laid out like articles about the various shows. This one, June 1969 Vol. 5 has the distinction of announcing Alice Cooper on June 13-14, 1969 and THE VELVET UNDERGROUND on June 27-28, 1969, as well as other shows by It’s A Beautiful Day and Santana Blues Band (as they were called at the time). I checked all of the several websites that catalog The Velvet Underground concerts and events and confirmed that they did indeed perform. One site referenced this item but didn’t even have an image of it, only a tiny clipping from a local Philly newspaper. The amazing plus for this is that the entire other side is a poster (very different from the one that is commonly known) and including a clip out coupon (not clipped out) to order tickets for the Atlantic City Pop Festival, August 1-3, 1969 at the Atlantic City Race Track with some great band photos, camping information, hotel suggestions, and more including the full line-up of: Friday, August 1 – Iron Butterfly, Johnny Winter, Crosby Stills & Nash, Procol Harum, JONI MITCHELL , Chicago, Santana Blues Band; Saturday, August 2 – JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, Creedence Clearwater, Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Butterfield Blues Band, B. King, Hugh Masakela, GRATEFUL DEAD , BYRDS, Lighthouse, American Dream; Sunday, August 3 – JANIS JOPLIN (2 shows), Mothers of Invention (FRANK ZAPPA), Canned Heat, Moody Blues, Three Dog Night, Joe Cocker, Dr. John the Night Tripper, Little Richard, Sir Douglas Quintet, Buddy Rich Big Band. And this was BEFORE the Woodstock Festival!! The poster measures 11″ x 17″ inches and is printed on newsprint paper. It is in startlingly excellent condition, especially considering its age and the paper it was printed on. It’s been keep out of sunlight so the paper is supple and not at all brittle! It has folds from being folded to be inserted into an envelope and mailed but otherwise is NEAR MINT! There is a tiny 1/4 inch edge tear on the bottom center but otherwise really clean and undamaged. VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO / ANDY WARHOL Original 1966 THE TRIP CONCERT POSTER

A very rare original concert poster advertising May, 1966 shows by Andy Warhols Exploding Plastic Inevitable featuring the Velvet Underground and Nico, at the Sunset Strip club The Trip (the New Shrine of Pop Culture). Silkscreened onto thin cardboard, the artwork reproduces the April 25, 1966 cover of Newsweek featuring a Roy Lichtenstein painting, and the Campbells Soup kids in the lower right corner. While the Velvet Underground was scheduled to perform two weeks of shows, the run was shut down by the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department after a few nights. This exceptional poster is highly sought after and for good reasonits from an early and legendary gig while the Velvets were part of Warhols multi-media Exploding Plastic Inevitable, has bold pop art colors, prominently mentions Warhol, and appropriates Roy Lichtensteins brilliant Time Magazine Pop cover. The 14 x 22 poster is in near excellent condition and displays beautifully. While this particular poster tends to fade in the sunlight, the colors on this example are bold and unfaded. There is a bit of light age toning around the edges and across the bottom, but this is a minor distraction. A few tiny chips to the surface around the edges are barely noticeable. The back has more significant toning, looking as if it sat on some sort of grate for many years, and a few minor tape pulls from previous framing, but none of this is visible on the front. Velvet Underground Holy Modal Rounders Rare BOSTON TEA PARTY’69 Concert Poster. Heres a very rare original concert poster advertising shows by the Velvet Underground and the Holy Modal Rounders, at The Boston Tea Party in January 1969. The poster, features artwork by David Lang. The poster is in good condition, is crunchy and has stains and corner folds. Please see all photos! The colors are pretty strong and bold, but there is fading over the years The poster measures approx 17x 22. Printed on thin paper, as most Tea Party Posters were….. But, not extremely thin. A rare opportunity to obtain a highly desirable Velvet Underground/Andy Warhol poster. This poster is for January 9th through the 11th, 1969 at The Boston Tea Party in Boston, Massachusetts. The first Tea Party on 53 Berkeley St. The artist is David Lang. Playwright and actor, Sam Shepard was the drummer for the Holy Modal Rounders who were on the bill for these shows. These posters were cheaply made, especially the earlier ones. I doubt anyone ever envisioned that they would someday become collector items. They were intended to be posted on walls, telephone poles, etc. To advertise that weeks performing artists only to be torn down, discarded and replaced next week with a new poster for the next show. From a Tea Party collector. True Tea Party Fact: Exact poster sizing measured from the two most common poster sizes is Large: 17.5W by 22H, and half size 11.25W by 17.5H. Also, 11 by 17 was common. Handbills generally were 8.5W by 11H. However, sometimes the posters and handbills were trimmed to fit into a glass case or on a wall where other events were being displayed. Also, the ones that hung in the venues tended to be larger. Thin poster card stock, for the majority of the posters. Some of the early ones were on paper, and other posters were on somewhat thicker card stock. Most handbills were on thin paper stock, however several were on poster card stock.
