Original 1984 large-format concert poster for one of the most historically documented shows in LA hardcore history – “Der Fuhrer’s Birthday / Good Friday” – presented by Selfish Productions. April 20, 1984 – Stardust Ballroom, 5612 Sunset Blvd, Hollywood, CA. This show was broadcast live on KMET-FM and the Circle Jerks performance has since been officially released as a professionally remastered live album – making this one of the most historically verified and documented LA hardcore shows on record. The concept is pure politically confrontational punk genius – staging a massive anti-fascist benefit show deliberately on Hitler’s birthday, April 20. The poster features repeated anti-Nazi imagery – swastikas and Iron Crosses crossed out in red circles – with the repeated slogan Bad Ideas Die Hard. ” The juxtaposition of “Der Fuhrer’s Birthday” with “Good Friday is exactly the kind of subversive, intelligent provocation that defined the best of LA hardcore. Artwork by Kunst: Messer’84 – credited on the reverse. Circle Jerks and Social Distortion are both LA hardcore legends with massive worldwide followings. This poster captures both bands at their absolute peak – 1984 is considered the golden year of LA hardcore. Hopkins, resident of Oquawka, IL and soundman to Corrosion of Conformity and a multitude of other bands passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50 after blazing a trail through his industry of live sound and touring with some of the best names in metal. His first sound gig was at the infamous Gabe? S in Iowa City. It was a gig that, with hard work, would eventually lead him to doing live sound and managing tours all over the world for such bands as COC, Weedeater, Orange Goblin, Neurosis, Overkill, Uncle Acid, Sleep, High on Fire and The Melvins. Along with doing live sound John also played music with regional bands such as Aunt Acid, Brick, Scrid, Kita, Burnout and The Horde. John was himself also a huge fan of music and had accumulated a vast collection while traveling and running live sound. He had recently been gifted the vinyl collection of his friend Reed Mullin (co-founder and drummer of Corrosion of Conformity) who had recently passed away himself. Mullin co-founded COC in Raleigh, NC with guitarist Woody Weatherman, bassist Mike Dean, and vocalist Benji Shelton. They combined their up-tempo hardcore with the hard rock influence of Black Sabbath to land in their distinct punk-metal crossover style. Those influenced by Mullin include Dave Grohl who called Mullin his? S Randy Blythe, guitarist Matt Sweeney, Charlie Benante of Anthrax, and Lars Ulrich. There is an entirely different process used in making each type of image. A lithograph is a very high quality machine printed image made by using a 4 color separation process much like how the covers of any color magazine is printed. A serigraph is a silk screened image. With a serigraph the original oil painting is scanned and separated digitally into each and every color found in the original. A separate silk screen is created for each and every color that was scanned. There are usually from 80 to 130 individual colors in the majority of some serigraphs. Each silk screen is precisely placed over the serigraph paper, and then by hand squeegee, paint for a specific color is applied. This single application of one paint color must then dry for at least 24 to 48 hours before the next color paint can be applied. It can take a serigraph up to 6 months to produce 1 run of as many as 500 serigraphs of the same image. Serigraphs are also produced in much smaller numbers than lithographs, and they are as costly to produce, and as close to the actual original painting as you can possibly get. At the Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO. Limited Edition Poster by Lindsey Kuhn. Lindsey Kuhn – Is there a cerebral connection somewhere between art and skateboarding? For some people skating is an art, for others art has nothing to do with skating. Then there are those who combine these two things to form a lifestyle. Lindsey Kuhn has found a way to turn his passions into career, and has been both skating and creating art for over three decades. He was born in Evanston, IL, but grew up on the coast of Mississippi where the now infamous Swamp ramp(s) stood for over ten years. In 1983 he began screen-printing t-shirts primarily to pay for maintenance of the massive ramp. Those simple t-shirts have ballooned into an internationally known company called SWAMP. Today Lindsey is best known for his silk-screened rock posters for hundreds of bands like The Melvins, Tool, Atmosphere, AC/DC and more. Swamp also does custom printing and publishes work for other artists. Lindsey moved to Austin, TX in 1990 and within a year started printing posters for Southern Californias Limagerie Gallery. Limagerie set up a small flat press shop in Austin produce rock posters for Frank Kozik, as well as, Serigraphs for other artists they represented. Such as Robert Crumb, Ed Roth, Robert Williams, Joe Colman, and others. While printing all this great art, Lindsey realized there was a demand for what he had been doing for years and seized the opportunity to learn from these lowbrow masters helping to revive the lost art of the Rock Poster. He has continued to create posters for over 20 years, keeping his D. Ethic alive by printing his own work as well as other artists from around the world through his print company called SWAMP, which is now located in Denver, CO. Social Distortion is an American punk rock band formed in 1978 in Fullerton, California. The band currently consists of Mike Ness, Jonny Wickersham, Brent Harding, David Hidalgo, Jr. An original, signed and numbered poster designed b y Lindsey Kuhn , for a 2001 Social Distortion concert in Denver, CO. It is a hand-pulled screen prin t from a limited edition of 365 posters in excellent condition. A massive skull on black paper with very cool eyes made with red foil!
