McCOY TYNER (Coltrane) rare vintage original 1980 jazz concert poster

Tyner was touring Germany in support of the. Album, recorded during April 1979 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and produced by Orrin Keepnews. AllMusic’s Michael G. Nastos awarded the album 5 stars and called it an extraordinary recording featuring some of the most remarkable, memorable and powerful music of Tyner’s career. The touring band for the European tour consisted of alto and soprano saxophonist Joe Ford, violinist John Blake, bassist Charles Fambrough, percussionist Guilherme Franco, and drummer George Johnson. Ford, Blake, Fambrough and Franco all featured on the. Tyner is considered to be one of the most influential jazz pianists of the late 20th century, an honor he earned during and after his time with John Coltrane. Tyner died at his home in New Jersey on 6th March, 2020, at the age of 81. The poster features artwork by Schneidewind, with the artist’s imprint to the bottom right corner. Printed on heavy orange paper with black ink. This poster is from a collection started in the early 1960’s by the original collector. It was acquired in a sale, so provenance of individual posters is unknown, but the collector had MANY original 1950s-70s posters in their collection. Having suffered a stroke in early 1982, which left his right hand paralyzed, Miles was in poor health. In spite of his weakened condition and lack of practice, he took the band on a month-and-a-half tour of Europe in April – the first European tour since 1973. Now playing with a cordless amplified trumpet, he was able to get by, though some nights he played from a wheelchair. The band featured saxophonist Bill Evans, guitarist Mike Stern, bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Al Foster, and percussionist Mino Cinelu. They were mostly playing the tunes on. “Jean-Pierre”, “Back Seat Betty”, “Fast Track”, “My Man’s Gone Now” – a double live album, produced by Teo Macero and released in May 1982. This was from the personal collection of Paul Williams who was a lifelong Memphian & Memphis music historian spanning all genres, in particular the blues band NRBQ. Paul owned AUDIOMANIA Records in Midtown Memphis, which was a local record hot-spot for 33 years. He also had his own radio show on WEVL here in Memphis and that ran for 43 years. As a younger man, he was an usher at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco during the late 70’s, when every rock-n-roll icon of the time was performing there nightly, he was even lucky enough to attend Bob Dylan’s two-week run of shows in 1979! After coming back to Memphis he worked at record Mecca, Pop Tunes, before opening Audiomania. Everything listed here from Paul, was either in his shop or in his personal collection at home. The graphic is directly stamped on this poster paper (screen print)… You can feel the actual paint! This is a 13×20 cardstock/poster paper material. The original owner of The Fillmore property, Emma Gates Butler, hired James W. And Merritt Reid in 1910 to draw plans for an Italianate-style dance hall at the southwest corner of Fillmore and Geary. The Majestic Hall and Majestic Academy of Dancing opened in 1912 on the second and third stories of the building, where the usual fare was Wednesday night socials and masquerade balls. The Fillmore was a dance hall operating under various names and managements – The Get Acquainted Society, Ambassador Dance Hall – through the 1930s, and a roller rink through the 1940s. In 1952, local entrepreneur Charles Sullivan began to book some of the biggest names in black music into The Fillmore. The careers of the Grateful Dead, the Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Moby Grape, the Butterfield Blues Band, and countless others were launched from The Fillmore stage. The most significant musical talent of the day has appeared there: Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Cream, Howlin’ Wolf, Captain Beefheart, Muddy Waters, The Who – well, you get the picture.
