The 1974 Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival “In Exile” is one of the most historically significant events in American music history – and one of the most politically charged. The Republican majority on the Ann Arbor City Council banned the festival from the city, citing “undesirables” and an influx of dope. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario offered its Griffin Hollow Amphitheater as an alternative, the festival went ahead – but not without a fight. The FBI and law enforcement officials turned back cars at the border, searched vehicles, arrested anyone found with drugs, and even prevented festival co-producer John Sinclair from entering Canada. Against all of this, the music was, by all accounts, transcendent. James Brown and Sun Ra on the same Friday night bill. BB King closing Sunday. John Lee Hooker in the afternoon. This is not merely a concert poster – it is a primary document of American blues, jazz, and civil liberties history. This poster is documented and catalogued in The Art of Rock – the definitive reference guide for serious concert poster collectors – as plate 4.199. It was produced by Rainbow Multi-Media in association with CKLW Radio and St. This piece is appropriate for Heritage Auctions, major blues and jazz memorabilia collections, and dedicated concert poster collectors.

Condition report: poster was stored folded, shows fold lines, also shows some tears and creasing especially on edges, in corners and in fold lines, may shows some yellowing and some stains Historical context. Interesting poster which is a beautiful example of the slight liberation of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s – jazz concert, where jazz itself was a symbol of the free and western world. In August 1968, after the beginning of the occupation by the Warsaw Pact troops, the regime was again very strict and a similar concert would be a rather rare exception. The Revolutionary Trade Union Movement (ROH) was a monopoly trade union organization that was also the most mass social organization in socialist Czechoslovakia. In many cases, employee membership in the ROH was practically mandatory and automatic. At that time, trade unions, like party cells of the Communist Party of the Czech Republic, also took part in the evaluation of workers in various situations, could vouch for them in criminal proceedings, etc. Extraordinary all-trade convention on 2.3. March 1990 decided on the abolition of the ROH and the transfer of powers and property to the successor organizations. The newly constituted unions united in the Czechoslovak Confederation of Trade Unions and its Czech-Moravian Chamber of Trade Unions, which still covers trade unions in the Czech Republic (Wiki).
