Background info: Patti Smith, after returning from a trip to Paris with her sister in early 1969, took up residence at the infamous Chelsea Hotel with Robert Mapplethorpe. By the close of 1969. She had been accepted as a fully fledged member of the Chelsea Hotel sect. When not writing poetry or working the till at Scribner’s bookstore, she could be found networking furiously in the hotel lobby. Within the year, Smith would become friends with such notable residents as Janis Joplin, Gregory Corso, Leonard Cohen, William Burroughs, and Harry Smith. Eager to establish contacts in the literary and artistic worlds, Smith and Mapplethorpe took to hanging out at the terminally hip Max’s Kansas City, which numbered among its diverse clientele such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Larry Rivers, and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as numerous celebrities from the realms of politics, high society, film and fashion. Just a few years later, first in 1973, Patti would be performing at Max’s Kansas City, first as the opening act for the New York Dolls (January 5-8, 1973) and then again as opening act for Phil Ochs (December 26-31, 1973) and then in 1974 as opening act for Elephant’s Memory (July 10-22, 1974) and then finally achieving headliner status, with TELEVISION as her opening act on August 28-September 2, 1974, the shows advertised in this historic poster! This is another “holy grail” of Patti Smith memorabilia from my personal collection. I’ve been collecting Patti Smith since the 1970s and this is one of only a handful of authentic posters that I have ever seen for this series of shows. This one was obtained from Richard Hell, who designed and had it printed at the time. I have seen reprints on a heavier paper, but this, one of the few surviving originals, is on a very thin paper.
