Pearl Jam & Mudhoney Winnipeg Silkscreen Concert Poster Greg Simkins 9/17/11
Pearl Jam & Mudhoney MTS Centre Winnipeg Silkscreen Concert Poster by Greg Simkins 9/17/11. Poster from their Epic 2011 Tour, just after the PJ20 Fest. Hand silkscreen poster from the show. Has not been unrolled since the show until take the photos. Tight roll, stored in a tube, crisp edges & corners, deeply saturated colors. Show review (via Last Exit). Why Go opens this gig in appropriate fashion, an energetic opener for an energetic show. A tight Animal follows. All Night is a surprise and sounds great here. Corduroy is next, another tight performance with an extra potent jam towards the end from all, a fantastic performance of the classic Vitalogy live staple. Ed mistakenly introduces the next one as Amongst the Waves, but it was Arms Aloft that’s next. He corrects himself and says to forget everything he just said. It’s a quality take of the Joe Strummer tune and I feel leads into Amongst the Waves quite nicely. In fact, Amongst the Waves-Small Town- Wishlist-Daughter has a nice almost peaceful vibe to it and helps calm the show down before it picks up again. Ed has a brief lyrical mess up towards the beginning of Wishlist. Daughter has a nice warmth to it on this boot, Matt and Jeff in particular. With Daughter we also get two fantastic tags. First is a haunting WMA and second is a lovely It’s Ok. Next is the highlight of the main set for me, Green Disease. One of favorite PJ tunes, this rendition is close to perfect and brings so much energy to the set. The Fixer and Even Flow are good takes, nothing noteworthy. I Got Shit is intriguing because Ed tags Uncle Neils Cinnamon Girl towards the end. Its rather atypical that Down-Ole-Unthought-Once sequence closes the main set, but it worked. All sounded strong on everyones part. This main set is a great one, but nothing particularly sticks out in a good or bad way. Every member seems spot on for the most part and the flow is active. Inside Job initiates encore 1 to good measure, better than Just Breathe opening (which blandly follows). A solid performance of the Avocado tune, Matts drums sounded spot on and his tone seemed to perfectly match this song tonight for some reason. Just Breathe follows and is your typical dependable play. Present Tense works well coming out of JB, another very respectable version with every member holding their own. A false start to Comatose and after the band stops, Mike and Matt jokingly play the opening of Aint Talkin About Love. They begin Comatose again, sounding better but Ed comes in just a second late. Not a big deal and the song is high energy after that. A very scratchy and rough tone Stone has during Mikes solo in Comatose but it works for the hard rocker. The Porch jam sounds lively and loose (almost more abstract than usual), closing the encore. Ed acknowledges the crowds energy and how its not lost on them. Search and Destroy begins encore 2. Neither my favorite nor least favorite cover, but Mark Arms vocals are not my cup of tea. Either way, its a MUCH better performance of Search and Destroy than what Calgary latter received. There it was god-awful, but here in Winnipeg its punk fun. The cover is my least favorite part of this boot, but luckily its short and not horrendous. A much better cover choice is next, Crazy Mary sounding warm and sweet. Alive has a very small and brief timing error on Matt and Eds part. I have a feeling many will not catch it. When this band gets off time they typically cover it up incredibly well, they are professionals. RITFW finds Stone rocking a sprightly guitar solo. A near perfect Indifference closes, with Stones quick accents stealing the song again. I feel I may be underselling this one a bit, and my review is not doing it justice. I remember this setlist being my least favorite of 2011 on paper, and then I gave the actual bootleg a fair listen. I fell in love immediately with the bands performance and high energy setlist flow. Upon initial listen I felt this was the most energetic show of the 2011 Canadian tour. Its remained a favorite of mine since. Along with Ottawa, this is the forgotten gem of 2011. While I must admit nothing particularly sticks out in a good or bad way, everything gels and works on this bootleg. Its a professional and tight performance, the boot sounds fantastic, and just all around so damn good. In 2005, Greg Simkins pursued his desire to paint as a full-time artist.
