Having suffered a stroke in early 1982, which left his right hand paralyzed, Miles was in poor health. In spite of his weakened condition and lack of practice, he took the band on a month-and-a-half tour of Europe in April – the first European tour since 1973. Now playing with a cordless amplified trumpet, he was able to get by, though some nights he played from a wheelchair. The band featured saxophonist Bill Evans, guitarist Mike Stern, bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Al Foster, and percussionist Mino Cinelu.
