BOB DYLAN Martin Luther King Jr 1963 MARCH ON WASHINGTON Orig Concert Handbill
Here is an original item one of the most important moments in civil rights and US history! This is an authentic original (printed BEFORE the concert) handbill / flyer advertising. The Historic MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM. This is the famous Civil Rights March where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Gave his famous “I Have A Dream ” speech. Other speakers and performers (some not listed on the handbill but well documented to have appeared and/or performed) include BOB DYLAN and JOAN BAEZ , Peter Paul & Mary, Len Chandler, Mahalia Jackson, others. This is a extremely rare item! It is one of several different handbills that were printed and distributed around the country and is perhaps the rarest version. I have only seen one other of this version in 40 years of collecting. It measures approximately 8 1/2 x 11 inches and is in VG+ condition. It was folded in eighths back at the time and is mostly flattened but would flatten more under some weight for a time. There are a few small brown age spots that are visible in my high-resolution scans. Y scans makes it appear toned but it is not. It is basically black ink on white paper. There are no tears or holes or significant damage. Amazing to have survived 57 years in any condition. Please see photos for accurate image report. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom , the March on Washington , or The Great March on Washington , was one of the largest political rallies for human rights in United States history and demanded civil and economic rights for African Americans. It took place in Washington, D. Thousands of Americans headed to Washington on Tuesday August 27, 1963. On Wednesday, August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. Standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech in which he called for an end to racism. The march was organized by A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, who built an alliance of civil rights, labor, and religious organizations that came together under the banner of “jobs and freedom”. Estimates of the number of participants varied from 200,000 to 300,000; the most widely cited estimate is 250,000 people. Observers estimated that 75-80% of the marchers were black. The march is credited with helping to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and preceded the Selma Voting Rights Movement which led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The actual order of the speakers was as follows: 1. Philip Randolph – March Director, 2. Walter Reuther – AFL-CIO, 3. Roy Wilkins – NAACP, 4. John Lewis – SNNC, 5. Daisy Bates – Little Rock, Arkansas, 6. Eugene Carson Blake – United Presbyterian Church and the National Council of Churches, 7. Floyd McKissick – CORE, 8. Whitney Young – National Urban League, 9. Several smaller speeches, including Rabbi Joachim Prinz – American Jewish Congress, Mathew Ahmann – National Catholic Conference, Josephine Baker – actress, and 10. Then closing remarks by A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, March Organizers, leading with The Pledge and list of demands. Gospel legend MAHALIA JACKSON sang “How I Got Over”, and MARIAN ANDERSON sang “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”. JOAN BAEZ led the crowds in several verses of “We Shall Overcome” and “Oh Freedom”. Dylan also performed “Only a Pawn in Their Game” and joined Joan Baez, Len Chandler and others to perform “Keep Your Eyes On The Prize”. PETER, PAUL AND MARY sang “If I Had a Hammer” and Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind”. ODETTA sang “I’m On My Way”. There is an extraordinary video of Dylan’s (and Baez) performance on You Tube if you search for Bob Dylan and Joan Baez 1963 March On Washington. If you are outside of the U. ORIGINAL POSTER PRODUCTION ART. THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. At Santa Barbara Bowl, Santa Barbara, CA. Original artwork for an Allman Brothers Band concert poster. Original, one-of-a-kind SIGNED item, by Randy Tuten. PLUS there is another poster for a Dave Mason concert on the back! In January 1969, after a year of being rejected as a poster artist by Chet Helms at the Avalon, 23-year-old Randy Tuten took his portfolio to the Fillmore where Bill Graham immediately hired him. Tuten was partial to traditional advertising styles, Graham was bound to receive his work as something considerably more akin to his own taste. Randy Tuten is the only poster artist to span 5 decades designing for The Fillmore. He remains a prolific poster designer today, and still a regular producer for Bill Graham Presents and other promoters. Tuten’s work has long been recognized for its seminal influence in the art of modern rock and roll, and has been featured in major museum exhibits as well as in several important book-length retrospective studies of rock art. Though his work shows the influences of the 60’s era, it has also evolved in recent years into an orderly and highly varied style of ornamental commercial art, often reminiscent of the advertising used in the deco era. The general consensus in the rock art community is that he has continued to grow as an artist and may be doing his best, most creative and exciting work at the present time. His posters are now a part of rock history, and for both curator and collector, will always be among the most desirable and telling artifacts of West Coast rock aesthetics. About the Allman Brothers Band. The Allman Brothers Band formed in 1969 in Macon, Georgia, United States and blended different strains of southern rock. And more into a flexible, jam-oriented rock and roll. Reflecting the emergence of the New South and setting the style for Lynyrd Skynyrd. The Marshall Tucker Band. And many other bands, the Allman Brothers Band also oddly or eerily, some would say had an unusual string of untimely deaths, a pattern similar to other Southern rockers. Through personal tragedy and turmoil, the group endured for decades. Reaching the peak of their commercial clout in the early 70s. They were highly respected and well received by legions of fans. Lead guitarist and band leader Duane Allman. Has been recognized as one of the greatest blues. Guitarists in history, according to numerous polls. Were living in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1960, and played in various bands until 1964, when they formed the Escorts, which became the Allman Joys. After their version of Willie Dixon. S Spoonful failed as a single, the two brothers and three other band members went to L. Where they signed with Liberty Records as the Hourglass. They recorded two albums of outside material (Hourglass, 1967, and Power of Love, 1968) before heading to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to record at Fame Studios. This is a one-of-a-kind production drawing by renowned rock poster artist Randy Tuten for a 1991 Allman Brothers Band concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl. An image of Robert E. Lee is surrounded by an art nouveau motif of lines and leaves. It is printed on translucent drafting paper, possibly vellum, which is taped onto a sheet of white paper, and printed. On the other side of the white paper is actually another poster! It is another R. Tuten poster for a Dave Mason concert with New Riders and Cate Bros. At the Frost Amphitheatre at Stanford on July 18th. Unfortunately the piece appears to have been exposed to moisture at some point and so the vellum is somewhat rippled. It is most pronounced in the lower left area. The drawing was done with pencil so luckily there is no running ink and very little if any staining, but the wrinkles/ripples are fairly pronounced, so the price has been reduced accordingly. It is SIGNED by Randy Tuten. Please check out the photos, all 11 are of the actual item. It’s a very cool, very rare, signed item and provides a bit of insight into the poster production process! The Dave Mason poster on the back is an added bonus! Date: October 12, 1991. Performers: The Allman Brothers Band & Little Feat. Dimensions: Approximately 11″x17″. Check out my other items. THE REVEREND HORTON HEAT. By Mike Martin – Enginehouse13. EngineHouse13 was formed in the fall 2000 with the idea to continue to produce limited edition concert art and to keep all involved somewhat sane. EngineHouse13’s brainchild, Mike Martin is a dedicated music lover that cranks out some of today’s best and most recognizable limited edition posters and designs in the world. The founding member of EH13, Mike Martin, is the driving force behind the EH13 phenomenon, the creative mastermind and the glue that keeps it all together and running like a well oiled small block! Mike is an avid pop culture, lowbrow art collector and is a car freak with an affliction for the custom and fenderless four wheel wonders. Now in their 9th year as a fully independent studio, the future is getting brighter and greasier by the day! The Reverend Horton Heat is the stage name of American musician Jim Heath (born 1959 in Corpus Christi, Texas) as well as the name of his Dallas, Texas-based psychobilly trio. Heath is a singer, songwriter and guitarist. The group originally formed in 1985, playing its first gigs in Dallas’s Deep Ellum neighborhood. Its current members are Jim “Reverend Horton” Heath on guitar and lead vocals, Jimbo Wallace on the upright bass, and Paul Simmons on drums. Their sound is self-described as “country-fed punkabilly”. Some of their songs could also be described as psychobilly. Their music is a mixture of country, surf, punk, big band, swing, and rockabilly, all played loud and energetically with lyrics that are often very humorous. The band has achieved success within the genre and even in mainstream America with many of their songs being featured in video games and commercials. Stuart Daniel Baker , better known by his stage name, Unknown Hinson , is a comedic country musician, songwriter, and voice actor. He is perhaps best known for his role as the voice of Early Cuyler on the Adult Swim cartoon series Squidbillies. The poster is a screen print, in very good condition, signed and numbered by the artist Mike Martin of enginehouse13 Studios, from a limited edition of 100 prints. B&W images of old-school cars between bright neon panels. This was for a 2003 Reverend Horton Heat show in Columbus, Ohio.
