1967 QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE BG-87-OP-1 BONNIE MACLEAN Concert Poster NM+
This listing features a vintage PRE-CONCERT FIRST PRINTING poster from a concert which took place in October of 1967 and was headlined by an up-and-coming band known as Quicksilver Messenger Service. The series of three shows took place at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on October 5-7, 1967. Quicksilver was one of the mainstays of the San Francisco concert movement and helped define the San Francisco Sound. The Grass Roots was also on the concert bill! This gorgeous poster was designed by legendary artist Bonnie MacLean and features a play on words not often seen in her work – a messenger in a winged helmet flies over the grass rooted next to the mad river, all matching the band names. The image used was the 87th from the iconic Bill Graham series and is commonly referred to as BG-87. This poster offered here was printed BEFORE the 1967 concert and is referred to as BG-87-OP-1. The BG-87 poster was only printed twice since 1967. The first printing poster, which is offered here, was printed BEFORE the concert on flat uncoated stock. The colors appear significantly different than they do on the post-concert 2nd printing; the purple is lighter, the grass is lighter green, and the river and wings of the creature are lighter blue. The original printing measures approximately 14″ x 21 1/16″ in size. The 2nd printing poster was printed after the show and was printed on glossy stock that displays darker colors as compared to the original printing. BG-87-RP-2 was printed on 12/14/1968 in a run of 1,000 posters and measures 14″ x 21 1/8″ in size. The poster offered here is in NEAR MINT to NM+ condition! It’s hard to believe that this poster was printed over 50 years ago! Finding the poster in this condition is incredibly difficult! It was a small print run to begin with and most people in the 1960s simply DID NOT take care of their concert posters! Many were hung on dorm room walls and/or telephone poles. This is a BIG reason why it’s so difficult to find this poster in NM or better condition! Several photos of this area have been provided. Other than that issue, this original poster is basically PRISTINE! You’d be hard pressed to find a better example. All of Bonnie MacLean’s vintage Bill Graham posters are HIGHLY collectible! BG-87 is one of the few Bonnie MacLean posters which is still affordable for collectors! As a result, the BG-87 poster offered here makes a great investment piece! In terms of upside investment potential, these vintage Fillmore concert posters are better than most blue chip stocks! Get this classic poster while it’s still relatively affordable! As part of Bill Graham’s penchant for pairing different musical forms on one bill, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, perhaps the greatest saxophone soloist in the history of jazz, opened for The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Bonnie MacLean’s original posters from the BG series are HIGHLY collectible. And BG-72 is one of the few posters which is affordable for all collectors! Peter Max Concert Poster signed by CSN Jimmy Buffett, Joe Walsh, Bonnie Raitt+22
This poster was a concert for a celebration of the life of Nicolette Larson in 1998. A wonderful singer who died too young. Her friends held this concert it was a stellar line-up. David Crosby, Stephen Still and Graham Nash of CSN, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt & The Section, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Buffett, Dan Fogelberg dec. 97, Paul Gurian, Emmylou Harris, Robert Hayes, Peter Max, Bonnie Raitt with Little Feat, Joe Walsh with musicians Rosemary Butler, Valerie Carter, Lenny Castro, Craig Doerge, Steve Farris, Jon Gilutin, Russ Kunkel, Lee Sklar and Waddy Wachtel. All of which hand signed this poster!! Stand outs are: David Crosby of CSN, hands down one of the harder autographs in music to get. Carole King, She too has to be in the top 20 hardest music autographs to get, she does not like to mingle with people much and thus she is very reclusive. Linda Ronstadt, she as well is extremely hard to get a signature from, very reclusive. Jimmy Buffett, has to be in the top 10 hardest to get an autograph from. Dan Fogelberg, he died in 07 and his signature are very hard to come by that are real. Peter Max who desinged this poster is one of the great pop culture artists of all time, he signed this as well right above the “MAX” art signature. Bonnie Raitt, she signs now and again but isn’t easy to get, she rarely signs without adding a dedication to it. Lee Sklar, one of the best session basist of all time, over 2000 recording credits, the guy is a legend and has played with everyone. The poster itself is about 24×36, on thick stock. As far as I know only a few were printed. It’s very rare. This is the one that was hanging in the lobby at the venue prior to the lead up for the show and it was pulled down the day of and it sat back stage as every single musician signed it, 100% of them. It’s not missing a single player. Beyond that, I have no idea who took it home or if it was auctioned off but I have it now. The condition is fair to good, not mint, it’s almost 20 years old. It’s never been hung up and it’s been rolled for all that time but the poster did get some dings and dents and small bends from being handled as it was taken around being signed by everyone, I can image a handler fumbling around for hours trying to catch up with everyone. It will need to be foam cored or if you prefer canvas mounted before framing which will take out most of the issue. If you have any specific questions please ask ahead of time. Thank you so much for viewing my auctions. I have been getting autographs in person in the Pacific Northwest for over 2.5 decades. I also traveled frequently over the years to get autographs up and down the west coast and beyond. Couple this with the fact that more and more people simply dont sign or sign very little. This is why only a handful of people do this in each city and is why people who sell real autographs have seemingly high prices. I guarantee everything I sell to pass any reasonable TPA such as ACOA, PSA, JSA or Roger Epperson. For albums I use crush proof mailers and I used chip boards and backers and bubble envelopes etc. Please keep this in mind. Condition and specific item details. I list a lot of stuff guys. It takes a lot of time. I cant always list every single detail so I ask that if you have a specific question about condition or potential minute flaws that you just ask. Getting autographs can be like a scrum and items can get little marks or dents along the way. Usually not, but it can happen. So while 99% of the items are perfect relative to the context, for example a used record is USED!! Some items may have minor flaws so if you are a stickler for details shoot me a message here and I will specifically check for you but it its noteworthy Id be forthcoming or just not list it. This also applies to where I got the item signed. I do not take proof photos. Proof photos are one of the biggest scams in the hobby. 99% of the time they dont show your specific items being signed so they prove nothing other than said person was signing autographs at some point in time. These photos are used repeatedly as a license to forge. People alter these images by photo shopping items into pictures and you can go online and grab any proof photos and use them as your own. I dont wish to make the signer uncomfortable and stop signing, my goal is to get more autographs, not generic images of them signing. Proof photos are big business in LA and NY for example where that photo being a license to forge is more valuable than the autograph itself. NY, LA and the UK are cesspools of the forging empire. Keep this in mind. The biggest myth in this hobby is that COAs prove authenticity. This doesnt even apply to top TPAs such as Becket or PSA. I regularly see fake times with TPA certs as do I see them fail real items. Authentication isnt an exact science so like any human they often make mistakes. I do not offer TPA certs with my items. I got them signed myself so I know they are real and dont need to pay someone else for their opinion on the matter. If you want a top TPA cert you will need to acquire this on your own at your own cost. Usually quick opinions can be had for a fraction of the cost too. I also do not offer a personal COA. A personal COA is just paper, it has no meaningful power of authenticity on the open market so what is the point? Im willing to give you something tangible but not a homemade meaningless COA.
